As a proud resident of Western Australia’s Great Southern, I know a thing or two about what makes a fantastic family holiday. When you think of family holidays, Queensland often springs to mind, and for good reason! The sheer variety of experiences there is astounding. From the iconic theme parks of the Gold Coast to the laid-back charm of the Sunshine Coast and the breathtaking beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, there’s something for every age and interest.
Gold Coast: Theme Park Thrills and Beach Bliss
The Gold Coast is practically synonymous with family fun. If your kids are thrill-seekers, a visit to Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, or Dreamworld is a must. These parks offer a full day of entertainment, from rollercoasters to animal encounters. My own kids absolutely loved meeting the Looney Tunes characters!
Beyond the parks, the Gold Coast boasts miles of golden beaches, perfect for building sandcastles and learning to surf. Head to Surfers Paradise for the lively atmosphere or find a quieter spot like Burleigh Heads for a more relaxed vibe. Don’t forget to explore the hinterland too – places like Tamborine Mountain offer rainforest walks, glow worm caves, and stunning views.

A little further north, the Sunshine Coast offers a more relaxed pace while still delivering on family adventures. Australia Zoo, founded by the Irwin family, is an unforgettable experience. The beaches here are also fantastic. Noosa Heads is a perennial favourite, with its beautiful national park walks leading to secluded coves, perfect for a family picnic. For a truly unique experience, consider a day trip to Moreton Island, accessible by ferry. You can feed wild dolphins at sunset, go sandboarding down massive dunes, and snorkel in crystal-clear waters. It’s pure magic!

The Melbourne Zoo is a world-class attraction, and the SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium offers an underwater adventure that kids adore. For interactive learning, the Melbourne Museum and the Scienceworks museum are brilliant, keeping little ones engaged for hours.
Don’t miss a walk through the Royal Botanic Gardens, where you can enjoy a family picnic or even take a punt on the Ornamental Lake. For a bit of history and a unique experience, consider a trip to Sovereign Hill, an open-air museum that recreates life in a gold rush town. It’s like stepping back in time!

While the iconic Twelve Apostles are a must-see, there are so many other stops along the way that kids will love. Of course, I can’t talk about family holidays without mentioning my own backyard! Western Australia has so much to offer, and we often forget the incredible gems right here.
Perth and Surrounds: City Fun and Island Escapes
Perth itself has undergone a fantastic transformation, with plenty of family-friendly attractions. Kings Park and Botanic Garden is one of the world’s largest inner-city parks and offers amazing playgrounds, walking trails, and panoramic city views. The Perth Zoo is also a great day out.
For a truly special experience, a day trip to Rottnest Island is unmissable. Rent bikes and explore the island at your own pace, swim in the turquoise waters, and, of course, take a ‘quokka selfie’! The kids will be absolutely delighted by these friendly marsupials.
Our Own Great Southern: Nature’s Playground
And then there’s the Great Southern! We have it all. In Albany, explore the historic whaling station at Discovery Bay, climb the Gap and Natural Bridge at Torndirrup National Park for breathtaking ocean views, and enjoy the beautiful beaches like Little Beach in the Torndirrup Peninsula. The National Anzac Centre offers a poignant and educational experience for older children.
Venture to Denmark and explore the Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk – walking amongst the ancient Tingle trees is awe-inspiring for all ages. Enjoy wineries with kid-friendly facilities, kayak on the serene rivers, or simply relax on the pristine sands of Greens Pool and Elephant Rocks. It’s a slower pace, perfect for families wanting to reconnect with nature and each other.
